The government has made new rules against tampering with IMEI number. IMEI number is a unique 15-digit serial number of mobile devices. If anyone tampers with this unique ID number, he will be punish for three year imprisonment and penalty. The decision will help curb issues pertaining to fake IMEI numbers and ease tracking of lost mobile phones.

The department of telecom said in a notification that It shall be unlawful, if a person, expect the manufacture- intentionally removes, obliterates, changes or alters unique Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number.

It is a unique ID of mobile. The mobile number in a handset may be changed by changing SIM but IMEI number can be changed by a technical person using special equipment.  The Telecom Enforcement Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cell of DoT found that 18000 handsets are using same IMEI number. The rules have been made in framed in combination of section 7 and section 25 of the Indian Telegraph Act.
