Hackers have broken into the systems of gaming store CEX and stolen the details of two million customers, including personal information and some financial data.

CEX, which sells second hand electronics and video games, said it was contacting two million customers of its WeBuy.com online shop who could potentially have been affected by the cyber attack.

The information stolen included names, addresses, email addresses and some phone numbers, as well as a small number of encrypted credit card details.

“We have recently be subject to an online security breach,” said CEX. “We wanted to reassure you that we are investigating this as a priority and taking a number of measures to prevent this from happening again.”

CEX said it hadn’t stored payment details for a number of years and that, as a result, those stolen had probably expired.

“We would like to make it clear that any payment card information that may have been taken has long since expired as we stopped storing financial data in 2009,” said CEX.

The company advised its customers to change their passwords for its site and other accounts that share the same login as a precautionary measure. It said it stored passwords in an encrypted form, but added this could be decoded.

Affected customers are at risk of being targeted by fraudsters looking to glean financial information. They should take steps to protect themselves, including be suspicious of unsolicited emails and calls.

CEX has since hired a cyber security specialist to review its systems and implemented additional defences, it added.

Customers who have not received an email alerting them to the breach are not likely to have been affected.

CEX was founded in 1992 and has stores in 11 countries including the UK, USA and Australia. It lets customers buy and exchange technology products such as mobile phones and video games.

The company claims WeBuy.com was the first online marketplace where users could buy and sell items. CEX stores are also among the few physical locations in the UK where shoppers can pay with bitcoin.
