In order to boost detection, the Mumbai Police are setting up independent cyber crime cells in each police station. A team of six-seven personnel had been selected from each station to constitute the local cell, and a five-day training programme for them commenced on Monday.

“Each cell will be headed by an inspector, who will have two officers of assistant police inspector or police sub inspector rank, and three-four constables. We are training the personnel at five venues set up in the five regions of Mumbai,” Akbar Pathan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber), said.

Mr. Pathan said that the training is being conducted by Cyber police officers and other experts, including those who give lectures at the Maharashtra Police Academy.

“The training comprises instructing the personnel in detection of commonly-reported cases and the tools used in such investigations. We are also training the personnel in framing strong charge sheets in order to boost the conviction rate, which will send out a strong message and might prove a deterrent to those indulging in such crime,” said an officer with the Cyber police.

The cells are expected to go operational on December 9. Currently, a victim can register a complaint at the local police station, after which the Cyber police either provide technical assistance or take over the probe.

The cells will also reduce the Cyber police’s workload and allow them to focus more on serious cases. “Common cases like misuse or hacking of social media accounts, credit and debit card frauds, and other such offences will be investigated by the local cell, while we will probe cases like denial of service attacks,” said Mr. Pathan.

In 2009, the Mumbai Police set up the Cyber police station in BKC.
