Ashland University officials have signed an agreement that will allow AU students to enroll in internships in the Wright State Applied Research Corporation’s (WSARC) intelligence and cyber training programs.
The agreement, which is effective Jan. 1, 2018, allows Ashland University junior and senior level undergraduate students to complete semester-long internships with WSARC.
“The intelligence field seeks students with a wide variety of liberal arts majors and we need to get that message out into the public,” said Dr. Dawn Weber, dean of the AU College of Arts and Sciences. “These internships will help students to gain their security clearance, to learn software used in the agencies and to begin working on actual cases.”
The residential internships, which can be taken in the fall, spring or summer semesters, are available through two separate programs – cyber security and intelligence — at WSARC in Beavercreek, Ohio.
Weber said AU students will leave this program with a cybersecurity or intelligence certificate and will be prepared to apply for positions in the intelligence or cyber security community.
In addition to the internship component, the agreement calls for AU and WSARC faculty members to jointly build Centers of Excellence in the intelligence and cyber field and also allows faculty members at the two institutions to collaborate on research projects, proposals and grants.
“This agreement leverages the unique missions and capabilities that both Ashland and Wright State have to meet a widely recognized need in the intelligence and cyber communities for an expanded talent pool,” Weber said.
There are currently an estimated 210,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in the United States and one million worldwide.
This program unites with Ashland University’s new minor in cyber security, which is a program that was started within the math and computer science department in the 2016-2017 academic year.
The Wright State Applied Research Corporation (WSARC) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation of the Wright State Research Institute. WSARC serves as the administrative agency that provides contracting administration services performed by the Wright State Research Institute as it conducts focused research and development, as well as commercialization supporting economic development for the Dayton region and the state of Ohio.
