A day after a journalist was summoned by the Mumbai Police in connection with a cyber crime case filed in June by an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, another person from Jaysingpur in Kolhapur was summoned in the case.

“I have received a notice through email. I have been asked to remain present before the Bandra cyber police station within seven days of receiving the physical copy of the notice. The notice pertains to the same case in which the journalist was summoned,” said Shrenik Narade, who was served the notice.

The Mumbai Police have over the past few days been sending notices to a number of people, asking them to depose in the investigation into a complaint filed by Nidhi Kamdar, who has alleged that a man named Dev Gaikwad created a fake profile in her name on Facebook. Over 25 people are set to be questioned by the police.

Gaikwad allegedly posted a screenshot of Kamdar’s fake account offering him money to change his opinion of Fadnavis. The police claimed the journalist’s statement was recorded on Friday after his name cropped up during the investigation.

A senior police officer said the cyber police began probing the journalist after learning that he had been in contact with Gaikwad. “He has been summoned in his capacity as an individual and not for committing any crime,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the Congress and NCP attacked the government for “muzzling” dissenting voices. There was an outcry on Twitter as well with several people claiming the notices were being sent to stifle the voices of those opposing the government.

While the police claimed the notices were part of the normal course of investigation, there have been allegations that only those who have been critical of the BJP government in the Centre and the state have been served notices.

Narade acknowledged he was a supporter of the NCP and said he would answer all the questions posed by the police. The state police have over the past few days been keenly examining posts on social media. Last week, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activist Mahendra Rawle was asked to delete a post on Facebook by the Kanjurmarg police. The police did that after local BJP workers complained that one of the posts was derogatory towards the Prime Minister.
