Selena’s Instagram account was deleted on Monday after it was hacked and posted naked pictures of her former boyfriend Justin Bieber.
Several pictures of Bieber were posted on the account, which appeared to have been taken in 2015 during his trip to Bora Bora – the trip in which pics of a nude Biebs were taken by paparazzi and then published on US websites.
And now the social media picture-sharing site says the bug allowed at least one person to access high-profile users’ private information, such as email addresses and phone numbers.
A spokesperson for the social media firm said on Wednesday: ‘We recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of high-profile Instagram users’ contact information – specifically email address and phone number – by exploiting a bug in an Instagram API.
‘No account passwords were exposed. We fixed the bug swiftly and are running a thorough investigation.
‘At this point we believe this effort was targeted at high-profile users so, out of an abundance of caution, we are notifying our verified account holders of this issue.’
While it is unlikely the bug alone was the cause of the breach to Gomez’s account, as it did not expose passwords, it may have aided attempts by hackers.
Selena’s account has since been restored, minus the pics of her ex Bieber.
Instagram bosses are now warning users to be wary of unrecognised phone calls, texts and emails.
