About a fortnight after the racket of duping people by reissuing their sim cards surfaced, a team of cybercrime cell is camping in Delhi to nab the kingpin of the scam.

The team has been on the trail of Jamir, who is believed to be mastermind of this gang that has been cheating people in the state. Members of this gang are spread across different states, police said.
“We are in Delhi to investigate the racket deeper. After making some arrests in the case, we have got some leads and mobile numbers that are now being tracked. It is learnt that Jamir may be in Delhi. Once Jamir is nabbed, we will be able to bust the entire gang,” a police official said. “Also, we may get some more clues about the case in Delhi.”
The cyber crime cell had registered two FIRs last month after two citizens approached them and complained of being duped of lakhs of rupees by a gang. The accused used to acquire sim cards in the victims’ name by producing their identity documents and then get the original one blocked by giving some or other reason in the telecom stores. They used the new sim card to operate the victims’ bank account online and transfer money from to their accounts.
Investigations revealed involvement of some men from Palanpur including owner of a telecom operator’s franchise who gave the accused SIM cards without proper verification. The accused have been arrested in the past in Delhi for acquiring SIM cards in other person’s name.
“In Delhi, we may be able to get lead about other suspects who have withdrawn siphoned money from the banks,” the police added.
