The state IT department is working on a Rs 100-crore project to set up a command centre manned by experts to address issues of cyber vulnerability that plague government websites, officials said today, a day after reports that hackers had targeted and defaced the website of the Jharkhand State Human Rights Commission.

The centre, to be set up in Ranchi, is being developed in partnership with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an autonomous body under the department of electronics and information technology.

“We will be sending details of the command centre for cabinet approval in a fortnight,” said an IT department official, who revealed that C-DAC had already made several presentations before them and the state police.

“It is a project worth Rs 100 crore which will take five years to complete. It has been planned in Ranchi and is expected to be set up over 5,000 sq ft. We have asked the state building construction department to identify space,” he said, adding that the JAP-IT building at Dhurwa could be an option.

The IT department official said the command centre being planned would have three components: security operations centre, cyber forensics and specialised cyber thanas in districts as per an MoU the government signed with C-DAC during the February global investor’ summit

“Security operations will primarily comprise activities like security audits of all government sites and applications. The cyber forensics wing will track and crack crime threads just like the forensic wing of the police department,” he explained, adding that C-DAC would train manpower at the cyber thanas.
